As part of your online orientation to the course, please do the following:

bulletPurchase the text (see syllabus) from the College Bookstore (it is a set of materials). You can purchase the book used but then you will need to purchase a tool called Visual Logic. To obtain this, go to www.course.com and search for the isbn 978-1-4188-3773-0. The cost is about $32. This should help you decide whether it makes sense to buy a used book or just get a new one that includes both the text and Visual Logic. It's possible to download Visual Logic for free, but this version does not allow you to save, which will be necessary in the course. You could start with the free version, but you must purchase the full version soon.
bulletDownload the data files for our course by going to www.course.com and typing in the ISBN of our text in the search text box:  1-4188-3618-4 . Your search should result in information about our text, where you will select Download Student Data Files (link in list on left). Right click and select "Save Target As." Once you have downloaded (preferably to the Windows Desktop), you answer yes to open the file and unzip to extract the files.
bulletCheck to see whether the unzipped files are on your hard drive. They should be in C:\CourseTechnology. Click inside this folder and keep clicking down the tree structure until you see the list of folders including Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc. I strongly recommend that you select and copy all of these folders to a folder you have created on your C:\ drive called CIS113. It will be to your advantage to have a simpler path to access these files; in addition, you will have fresh copies of the files in the original download structure. The easiest way to access Windows Explorer to manage your files is by holding down the Windows Key (between Ctrl and Alt) and tapping the letter "E." The good thing about this method is that it's a one step method regardless of what is on your screen at the time.
bulletInstall the Rob the Robot program for use in our course during the first couple of weeks. Do this by going to Windows Explorer (see above) and accessing the RobInstallation folder (inside the C:\CourseTechnology  folder). Double click the Setup icon in this folder. The software should be installed.
bulletInstall Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition (type that in in your search engine such as google) on your computer. It's available for free download from Microsoft (you do have to register, though, to use for more than 30 days). Make sure you can get into the software.
bulletIf you experienced any difficulty with any of these processes, try them a second time. If it still doesn't work, please note any messages you get and write down exactly what the problem was. Note it on your orientation materials. All of these processes must be completed by the end of the second week of class at the latest so we can be ready to program in C++!
