Before the First Class Meeting

Complete the following reading and writing assignments before the first meeting (February 3). All reading is from Technical Communication in the Twenty-First Century, 2nd edition, except as noted.

Reading: The calendar lists the dates we will discuss each chapter, except for Chapter 14. Chapter 14 discusses the résumé and application (cover) letter, which are due on the first day of class. Read this chapter on your own. You will be quizzed on it.

  •   Chapter 1: Technical and Professional Communication in the Workplace

  •   Chapter 2: Rhetoric and Technical Communication

  •   Chapter 3: Technical Writing and Electronic Technologies

  •   Chapter 7: Organizing and Drafting Documents

  •   Chapter 10: Revising, Rewriting, and Editing

  •   Section APA-2, pp. 500-03: Avoiding Plagiarism, in A Writer’s Reference, with Exercises, 7th edition (WRE)

Writing (due February 3):

1.      After reading Chapter 14, write a résumé (either chronological or functional) and application letter responding to a real job advertisement. You must submit the advertisement with the assignment. Each document should follow the formats discussed in the textbook. Pay particular attention to "You" attitude (review this in the chapter on “Correspondence”). {Do NOT include references as part of the résumé; this is not common, though the textbook shows it.} I will grade each document separately.

2.      Write a memorandum (following, as best as you can, proper memorandum format), addressed to me, which does the following:

      a.       Introduces yourself to me (i.e., where you are from originally, where you live, your favorite dessert, and so on; please do not list your actual street address)

      b.      Explains what you are studying, and why (e.g., your major)

      c.       Explains what you expect to get out of this class, and what you plan to put into this class (other than an ‘A’)

3.      Log onto http://www.umuc.edu/writingcenter/plagiarism/index.cfm and complete the UMUC Plagiarism Module and Plagiarism Post-test. When you have completed the Post-test with a 100% score, you will be prompted to complete and print a Certificate of Completion. Submit that certificate to me on February 3. Without the completed certificate, I will not accept any assignments from you.

4.   Complete the following exercises from A Writer’s Reference (do only the numbered sentences):

a.       P1-1 (p. 288-89)

b.      P1-3 (p. 291-92)

c.       P2-1 (p. 305-06)

Complete the following reading and writing assignments before the second meeting (February 4).

Reading:

  •   Chapter 6: Researching and Evaluating Source Materials

  •   Chapter 9: Layout and Design

  •   Chapter 15: Technical Definitions

  •   Chapter 16: Technical Descriptions

  •   Chapter 20: Proposals and Requests for Proposals

  •   Chapter 21: Informal Reports

  •   Section APA-3, pp. 503-10: Integrating Sources, in WRE

  •   Section APA-4, pp. 510-35: Documenting Sources, in WRE

  •   Section APA-5, pp. 535-39: Manuscript Format, in WRE
