Our department is dedicated to the study and practice of the visual arts. Our full and adjunct faculty are skilled artists as well as knowledgeable in the challenges of teaching. Many of the faculty exhibit their work in area galleries. Some faculty exhibit more widely. We feel that the practice of art is the only true teacher and therefore, we hold a group exhibition in our college gallery each year. We have designed our programs to be both in the classical traditions in art as well as offer a broad range of expanding art venues. We understand that art must be dynamic while not forgetting the need for a strong grounding in Basic Design, Drawing I and Art Survey during the first year of study. These courses set the foundation and language for all visual courses. Prince George's Community College prepares students for direct entry into art related careers and for transferring to four-year institutions. To this extent, we offer counseling and job placement assistance to all students. Cooperative education and advanced placement are also available with the department's recommendation. Transferring students should become familiar with prospective institutions and seek advice in selecting appropriate courses of study. Many students enroll in art to enrich their lives. Our student body is greatly diverse in ethnicity, age experience and education. These students often come prepared to learn new ideas, refresh clouded interests, enhance their skills and embark on new careers. This makes the whole learning experience more exciting for the entire class. Teachers are challenged to work more independently with their students so that all enrolled are given the direction and input they need. Class critiques of the work are conducted periodically to expose the group to new ideas and vocabulary. A dialogue between the teacher, students and their classmates allows the chance to practice new concepts and theories among their peers. |
