Students with the goal of directing an early childhood development/child care center in Maryland are advised to select Curriculum 763, A.A.S. Degree in Early Childhood Education.  For students who do well academically, courses will also transfer to Sojourner-Douglass College in Landover, MD (located near the New Carrollton Metro station).  At Sojourner-Douglass, students may continue to study towards the bachelor's degree to prepare to teach in public schools. 

The following courses are required:

___ECE 156, Introduction to Early Childhood Special Education

___ECE 257, Curriculum Development in Early Childhood Education

Then take the following courses:

___ECE 154, Observing and Recording Child Behavior

___ECE 170, Multicultural Education in the Preschool Classroom

___ECE 191, Early Childhood Program Management

___ECE 251, Language Arts for Young Children, or EDU 210, Processes and Acquisition of Reading

___ECE 254, Field Work in Early Childhood Education, or ECE 220 plus ECE 221, Internships in Early Childhood Special Education

___Early Childhood Education Electives (6 credits) selected from: ECE 100, Basic Concepts in Early Childhood Education; ECE 165, Planning Programs for Infants and Toddlers; ECE 220, Internship in Special Education I; ECE 221, Internship in Special Education II; ECE 251, Language Arts for Young Children; ECE 254, Field Work in Early Childhood Education; ECE 259, Planning for Creativity; ECE 260, Guiding Behavior in Early Childhood Education; ECE 281, Instructional Technology in Early Childhood Education; EDU 200, Foundations of Education; EDU 210, Processes and Acquisition of Reading; EGL 223, Children's Literature; PSY 203, Child Psychology; PSY 206, Educational Psychology; ECE 291-293, Cooperative Education.  (Please note that elective courses must be in addition to courses taken as program requirements).

General Education Courses;

___EGL 101, Composition I

___EGL (Composition II.  Choose EGL 102, Writing About Literature; EGL 110, Writing About Issues and Ideas; EGL 132, Writing for Business; or, EGL 134, Writing About Technical Topics)

___MAT 105, Elements of Mathematics, or a math course with a higher number (From general education course list in college catalog)

___Science (Any science course from the general education course list in the college catalog)

___PSY 101, General Psychology

___SPH 101, Introduction to Speech Communication, or SPH 109, Interpersonal Communication

___One of the following: ART 151, Basic Design; MUS 101, Music Appreciation; PHL 101, Introduction to Philosophy: The Art of Questioning; THE 101, Introduction to the Theatre; or, any foreign language

___ECE 281, Instructional Technology in Early Childhood Education, or CIS 101, Computer Literacy (ECE 281 recommended)

___HLE 215, Introduction to Child Health
