African American Studies

Course Descriptions

AFA courses meet for 3 hours per week, or the equivalent, and are 3 credit courses.


AFA 101. Introduction to African American Studies.
Examines the multidimensional aspects of the African American experience in the United States with an integrated approach to history, politics, economics and culture from an African American perspective.

AFA 201: Introduction to the African  Diaspora.
A comparative analysis of black communities outside continental Africa,, with emphasis on the United States South, the Caribbean, Central and South America. Attention will be given to the awakening sense of political inter-relatedness that undergirds contemporary Pan-African movements, and the renewal of traditional African culture and values in Diaspora.
