Professor Dipo Kalejaiye is an Associate Professor of English at Prince George’s Community College in Largo, Maryland. He is an award-winning poet, playwright, and theater director. Some of his awards include: Ina Coolbirth Prize for Poetry, The James D. Phelan Literary Award for Playwriting, and The San Francisco Full Circle Theater Award. In continuation of his deep commitment to the theater, he directs THE AMUYO AFRICAN THEATER, a group dedicated to the performance of West African folktales as theatrical performances. The most recent performance of this group was at the Smithsonian. Professor Kalejaiye has published poems, plays, short stories, and critical writings.

West African Drumming and Dance Workshop

Professor Kalejaiye presents a program of West African Drumming and Dance Workshop to the community. This program is a hands-on demonstration of traditional West African drumming which involves at least 15 percussion instruments. Children and adults will enjoy this intense, vivacious, and polyrhythmic drumming of West Africa. The famed djembe drum and the Yoruba talking drum provide the base for this high energy drumming and dance program.
