Internet Terms
Internet Terms
The internet
connects computers around the world via a network of
networks.
A subset of the internet is known as the
World Wide Web or WWW. By accessing the WWW, one
can find many sources of information on just about any
topic. Also, the WWW stores the special HTML
(hyper-text markup language) documents more
often known as web pages. The most unique thing
about web pages are that these are where hyperlinks are
stored.
Hyperlinks
Adding Hyperlinks
Hyperlinks are references that take you to
another website once it is clicked on. Hyperlinks make
it much easier for the user to quickly go from one
site to another.
To add a hyperlink to a work, first click
on the destination range, meaning the range in which the
hyperlink will be placed. Left click on this cell and go
to insert at the top of the screen. Click on insert and
scroll down to hyperlink. Click on hyperlink. Now type the
file name or web page address in the field that says "Type
the file or web page name in here." When you are ready,
click the okay button and close up the dialog box.
Your hyperlink should
now be inserted into the destination range. Most times you
will know it worked when the link turns blue and is
underlined. These two things characterize that it is a
link.
Remember to save your
workbook so that you do not lose your work.
Editing Hyperlinks
Once you have already
put in a hyperlink in a destination cell, you may need to
change the address of the link. Sometime certain links may
not work so you will need to replace it with another one.
This is known as editing the hyperlink.
First off, left click
on the cell that contains the hyperlink. Then you must
right click on the hyperlink and a box will pop up. Scroll
down towards the bottom and click on "Hyperlink". Then
another box will appear, this time click on "Edit
Hyperlink". Then another bigger box will appear that
contains the old address. Type in the new address in the
box to replace the old address. When you are finished,
click the "OK" button. Now your link has been changed.
Saving as a Web Page
Saving as a Web Page
Sometimes you may want to save your workbook as a
webpage instead of a regular document so that one can
open it through internet explorer or you may want to
host in somewhere on the World Wide Web. Windows has
made this process quite simple.
To start the process of saving an excel
spreadsheet as a webpage, go to the top of the screen
where it says File and scroll down to "Save as a webpage."
Click on it and a box should pop up. You must then select
a drive and folder where you want to save it in. Type in a
file name in the "File Name" box located in the center of
the screen. Then under that box is another box titled
"Save as type:" Click on the down arrow and find "Web
Page." Click on Web Page and hit "Save."
Now your worksheet has
been saved as a webpage and can be viewed through internet
explorer.
When storing a
worksheet as a webpage, the user may want to hide certain
column of data from the reader's view. To accomplish this,
we have something called the "Hide Column Command."
To start off, select the column (s) you would like to
hide, right click, and then scroll down to "Hide."
To reverse the process
and "unhide" the column, just follow the same steps.
Web Toolbar
Web Toolbar
The web toolbar can be
found on any application in Office 2000. It is a bar that
consists of buttons very similar to the one in Internet
Explorer.
Some of the buttons found on the toolbar
are the Home, Search, Forward, Backward, and Favorites
buttons. For example, hitting the Home button will take
you to the site that you saved as your home site. When the
web application is opened, it will go directly to this
home site that you have specified.
The address bar which
can be found directly underneath the main web toolbar
displays the address of the document that you are looking
at. You may have several windows open with several
toolbars.
The ability to run several applications
at once is known as multitasking. This allows the
user to keep open applications so that there is no need to
close out of it but that advantage is that it shrinks the
size of the window so that it saves space.
