COLLEGE BOWL
The College Bowl team competed in the Delta Burke tournament for two-year colleges hosted by Valencia Community College in Orlando, Florida. The team, consisting of Aaisha Bah, College Bowl captain, James Caple-Nisby, Eric Gamboa, Amirah Bashir, and Scott Maddox, was undefeated in the first 17 rounds of competition! Esther Hanson, College Bowl coach, welcomes students to join and participate in College Bowl practices on Friday afternoons at 2 p.m. in M-1088.

Esther Hanson gave a presentation on "Establishing a College Bowl Team at a Two-Year Institute" at the ACUI conference at Penn State University in November 2002.

MODEL UN
Also in November, the Model UN presented Anders Hjorth of the World Bank, who lectured on issues facing Africa.  The Model UN Club meets weekly and is currently developing a Web site of its activities.  For more information, contact Dean Kostantaras, club sponsor, on extension 0525.

HONORS SOCIETY
Students in the Honors Society attended two outstanding public lectures at the Woodrow Wilson Center:

• Former President William Clinton delivered an address on AIDS in Africa. After the lecture, PGCC students met with Mr. Clinton and had pictures taken with him.

• Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbechev discussed water rights affecting land-locked nations.

In conjunction with Phi Theta Kappa, Honors Society members held a successful fundraiser selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts. They used the funds to attend a performance at the Folger Theatre.

Members of the Honors Society attended campus visits and open houses at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, Washington College, and St. Mary's College of Maryland.

PHI THETA KAPPA
Phi Theta Kappa students and Honors students from Largo High School initiated a blanket drive for the homeless. The blanket drive will continue throughout the winter months.

Phi Theta Kappa co-sponsored "Directions and Dimensions of Health: Choices in the Maze" with the division of Sciences, Math, and Health Technology. This five-part satellite series on the environment and health is described in more detail in Marie York’s article in this edition of the Instructional Forum.

Feyisola Ayodele and Naomi Richburg won a writing contest, sponsored by Tau Pi, our chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. They will be recognized at the Honors Student Convocation on May 7, 2003.

The Second annual Fall Induction Ceremony for the Tau Pi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa was held on December 6, 2002, in Marlboro Gallery. The new members are:

Ronald Crouch, PGCC alumnus and Jack Kent-Cooke Scholarship recipient, was featured on the National Phi Theta Kappa Web site in December. Crouch, who is studying community psychology at George Washington University, was one of 39 community college students selected nationwide to receive the $30,000 Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship.

Please encourage your academically outstanding students to join the Honors Program, become a Phi Tau Pi member of Phi Theta Kappa, and get involved in Honors co-curricular activities. For further information, contact Esther Hanson.

HONORS ACADEMY
Seven new members were admitted to the Honors Academy. The new and returning Honors Academy members attended a September 2002 reception/orientation. The guest speakers were Honors Academy graduates Graciela Rodriguez-Santos (nursing student at Howard University), Joshua Miller (senior at Washington College), and Ronald Crouch (junior at George Washington University).
