PGCC Radiography Program Policy on
Pregnancy and Ionizing Radiation

Regulatory Guide 8.13, published by the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission, is given to each student entering the Radiography Program. The published document recommends that pregnancy be reported to the Radiography Program officials in order to protect the unborn child from potentially hazardous effects of ionizing radiation. This document can be accessed on the web on the NRC website.

The Radiography Program of Prince George's Community College takes the position that the reporting of pregnancy to program officials be voluntary on the part of the student.

If a student chooses to declare pregnancy, she will be expected to have a Disability Release Form completed by herself and her physician as mandated by the College. Upon receipt of this form, the student may continue in clinical education courses without interruption.

Once declared, the student will be issued an additional radiation badge for the fetus, to be worn at waist level (fetus level) under the lead apron. Pregnant students will be counseled on the effects of ionizing radiation to the unborn child, re-emphasizing information found in NRC Guide 8.13 consistent with guidelines set forth by the State of Maryland.

Pregnant students may be assigned to areas of least ionizing radiation exposure if so requested. Any time missed in mandatory clinical areas must be made-up after the pregnancy in order for the student to complete all clinical education requirements for graduation from the program.

Should a student chose not inform the program about a pregnancy, the college and/or the clinical education center cannot be held liable for any complications experienced by the mother or the child.
